OUR "NEW" LIBRARY

In 2019 the Georgetown Library received a bequest of $1.16 million from the late Jean Flournoy Moody, who was a regular user of the Georgetown Library from around 1955 until her death in late 2017 at the age of 96. The Library Board gratefully accepted the gift and together with the Georgetown County Council decreed it should be used to improve the facility where Moody spent so much time, and that a portion of the improved building be named in her honor.

The resultant renovations of the Library include a larger auditorium, new office space, and the conversion of the old auditorium space into technology rooms. The interior of the Library has been completely repainted with new flooring and a lighting upgrade.

The Friends were actively involved in the renovation project with the provision of volunteers to box the books in moving out and emptying boxes when moving back in after construction was completed. The costs of the move out of the Library and of the boxes needed to move all the books and equipment were also covered by the Friends.  The beautiful murals in the Children’s Reading Area were paid for by the Friends.

A major contribution of the Friends was the Library Landscaping Project.  The Friends worked with professional landscapers and local gardening experts on a plan to landscape the areas around the new Auditorium on the corner of Cleland and Church Street/Route 17 and the covered garden area at the back of the Library by the County Judicial Center parking lot.  The landscaping has been completed with much of the planting and mulching work accomplished by Friends volunteers.

And our final project for the “new” Library is in process:  the Whispers of My Ancestor statue.  Whispers combines everything the Friends are looking for in a special piece to be placed in the Children’s Reading Area of the Library:  beauty and inspiration for all the children using the area.  The statue will depict Harriet Tubman helping a young James A. Bowley up a set of stairs gesturing upwards towards his future.  As Wesley Wofford, the sculptor, describes his vision, “It speaks of the power of building on the foundations of those that came before us, and the long-term effects of nurturing education to uplift the next generation.”  That’s an important message for those who will be using our new Children’s Reading Area.

Our thanks to all our Friends and the Georgetown community who through their donations, membership contributions, participation in Friends events, and volunteer service have made all this possible!
